Meet the Principal
Principal Tom Szczesny
I was born in Royal Oak, MI and lived in MI until I was 21. After graduating from the University of Michigan (Go Blue!) I moved to Philadelphia, PA, where I met my wife, Lauren. We had wonderful adventures exploring the country and its National Parks. In that time, We also started our most adventureful adventure of all: parenthood. Our first daughter, Eleanor, was born in Philadelphia. Then, in 2021, we moved to CO where our second daughter, Andersyn, was born.
My journey serving schools began in high school and college when I volunteered in elementary schools in Southfield and Detroit MI. Stirred by the experience, I pursued education out of college from UMich, teaching HS in Philadelphia at the start of my career. I then spent 3 years at Penn GSE working toward my Ed.D. I missed the energy of schools, which motivated me to moved into an AP role at Mayfair before becoming Principal at Dobson, which was my last stop before Powderhorn.
Now, I couldn’t be happier serving our Panthers everyday. I love Powderhorn because of its people: the students, the staff, and the families. It's a true community, and we should be proud of the sense of belonging we create. The staff is tireless, working and caring for our students. It's an endless source of joy to see the students' successes, and the families are incredibly supportive in how they look out for us all. It's inspiring to see how everyone at Powderhorn is truly present for each other and shares a commitment to seeing students grow in all the ways we know are important — socially, emotionally, and academically.
