What is PBIS?
Positive Student Behavior Support

The PBIS/PAWS(Positive All Welcoming Smile) committee was awarded a grant last year to assess the climate and culture for Powderhorn Elementary. After surveying students and staff, the results indicated as a community we needed a systematic approach and language to teach students how to problem solve. Based on CASEL(Collaborative Academic, Social, Emotional Learning) guide the Second Step social emotional program was chosen. "Second Step helps children develop their social and emotional skills- including making friends, managing emotions, solving problems- to set them on the path for social success and academic readiness". Student PAWS

Paws are rewarded to students for observed acts of being safe, respectful and responsible throughout the course of the day. Purple Paws are worth 1 PAW. There are dollar increment PAWS that students can earn if they get enough purple paws. There are Golden PAWS that are given out every Friday by the classroom teacher to one student in their class. This student is recognized on school news for their outstanding effort or acts and given a Golden Paw, which is worth 5 PAWS. Once a month the students take all of their earned PAWS to the PTA run PAW store. There the students can buy items ranging from stickers to leather basketballs. It was stated by an ex-member of CDE and current PBiS liaison for the Jefferson County school district that our PAW Store is the best student behavior store that she has visited in THREE states. Classes can also earn Class PAWS. This is when the entire class is observed exhibiting safe, responsible or respectful behaviors. Each classroom teacher sets a goal of class PAWS for the class to reach. Once the class reaches that amount then the class has a PAW party. The teacher resets another goal after the initial party and so on throughout the school year.

Staff PAWS

Staff are recognized once a week by their colleagues during staff meetings. Every Wednesday there are two panther PAWS that are passed among staff to acknowledge/thank a colleague for their support/hard work. The staff receive the reward panther PAWS from their colleague and keep it in their possession for the next week.
