Why Should You Attend Powderhorn Elementary?

Our veteran staff has a proven track of achieving positive student outcomes. In 2022, the school was recognized by the state of Colorado for its academic growth. We earned the distinction because our skilled, passionate, committed staff tailors their instruction to meet your students’ needs. This includes staffing K rooms with trained paraprofessionals in order to provide extra adult support for more individualized instruction. We follow Jeffco School District’s CDE aligned and approved curriculum, which includes HMH Into Reading for Literacy and starting next year, Illustrative Math, for Math. We also make sure to include unique experiences, like field trips, that will expand students’ horizons.

We also prioritize mental health and students’ social-emotional development. We have a full mental health team that includes a full-time counselor, social-emotional learning specialist, and restorative practice liaison. Through daily and weekly lessons, we teach all of our students how to interact with peers in a healthy manner and develop the executive skills they need to thrive in the world today. Our team also uses restorative practices to teach conflict resolution through tools, such as the Peace Path. Finally, students have many opportunities to lead in the school through Student Forum, Healthy Schools, and Positive Incentive (PBIS) program. Social-emotional learning and leadership opportunities both provide the spaces where we teach and cultivate these essential skills and mindsets.

At Powderhorn all students also have the opportunity to participate in Computer Science, Art, Music, and Physical Education (CAMP). Powderhorn is one of the few Jeffco elementary schools with a Computer Science program, and its curriculum includes coding and keyboarding. The school’s CAMP team also organizes our annual CAMP Night to showcase student talents and offers choir. Students have one of these classes on a daily basis, and each provides a chance to develop special skills and abilities while attending to the whole child.

Finally, I want to acknowledge that nothing is possible at school without you. Thank you for being here for your student and for all that you have done and continue to do to support them. We will soon be partners, and we genuinely value, appreciate, and welcome your presence. In fact, there are a number of ways you can engage with the school, including the PAC (Powderhorn Advisory Committee), PTO, and Watch D.O.G. program, among others. The PTO also organizes events throughout the year to bring families together in fun ways, including Panther Prowl, Trunk or Treat, the Carnival, and Skate Nights. You can also expect weekly communication from us about this all because Powderhorn offers many great experiences for students. We’re excited to share them all with your family.
