New Policy as of September 2018
Our new “No Dogs Policy” is between 8:00am-4:00pm. Pets are not allowed on school grounds when students are on campus due to allergies and the unpredictability of animals. Signs will soon be posted on the edges of our campus. We appreciate your help in keeping our students safe.
Powderhorn acknowledges the important role that pets, dogs in particular, play in our community and the positive impact dogs can have on family life. A dog can be a joy but they are also a big responsibility. The school also acknowledges the benefits of walking to and from school in a family group with a dog. Recently, however, more dogs are being brought onto school grounds. This has the potential to increase the risk of injury to children by dogs (e.g. bites and scratches) through dogs reacting adversely to unexpected noise and/or movement of children.
  • For the safety of children to be the first priority at Powderhorn
  • For dog owners to carefully consider the risks involved in bringing a dog into an environment where there are lots of young children, some of whom are unfamiliar and/or afraid of dogs.
  • For dog owners to carefully consider the necessity and risks of bringing a dog onto the school grounds.
  • For dog owners to keep their dogs at home if there is any risk of their dog becoming aggressive at school toward humans or other dogs.
Beginning September 2018, no dogs will be allowed on Powderhorn Campus on school days between 8:00am and 4:00pm.
Dogs are only allowed on the school site under the following implementation conditions:
  1. While serving as a certified service or guide dog under ADA guidelines.
  2. While assisting a peace officer engaged in law enforcement duties.
  3. With academic relevance that meets the language, intent, and requirements of District Policy IJN.
